Leo Tolstoy’s Anna Karenina [VHS]

Sophie Marceau plays the title character in this 1997 version of Tolstoy’s classic, set in Imperial Russia. Bernard Rose (Paperhouse) directs, but his accent is on sumptuousness instead of performance, and the result is that much of what happens–especially Anna’s affair with Vronsky (Sean Bean)–is opaque and unbelievable. (Bean in particular is badly suited to his part.) A redeeming feature is …

In his 19th screen outing, Ian Fleming’s superspy is once again caught in the crosshairs of a self-created dilemma: as the longest-running feature-film franchise, James Bond is an annuity his producers want to protect, yet the series’ consciously formulaic approach frustrates any real element of surprise beyond the rote application of plot twists or jump cuts to shake up the audience. This time ou…

Mel Gibson has only directed a few films, but everyone seemed to have had a lasting impression on the audience. "Braveheart" was probably the only one that generally it was known that the general public, without controversy. Based on the life of William Wallace, a Scottish commoner who the Scots against England and King Edward Longshanks' lead grew, the film is an epic historical, romantic, with great battle sequences and grisly life characters. It is hard not to get to caught up in the history of Wallace, as I said, and acted by Gibson. The script takes some liberties with the story, but then so many Hollywood movies Based on the history have done. If you look at history you will probably get this film into pieces, which may beside the point because as a story "Braveheart" is a gripping, emotional journey.

We are William Wallace as a child, where he discovered the body, introduced his father hanged in a Hut, together with other men as a messenger of peace to King Edward, who acted no peace in his mind. At the funeral, he is from another girl that approached him a purple flower as a sign of respect and compassion. Flash, a number of years, Wallace (Gibson), returns home, begins a relationship with the girl from his childhood, and they married in secret so that the English lords can not correct their legal right to "first night" – the sexual right, the new woman in the Night before her wedding. Finally it go bad when they are discovered, and in a frantic struggle to escape from Wallace in the situation, but his wife is from the English caught. The Lord of the city they are running. Wallace returns, demanding his revenge by killing the Englishman and his soldiers. Finally, growing The thirst for revenge, as he takes a village after another, and defeated the British, until it culminated in several major battles with Wallace and his army to win in each. He assumes the man, the freedom to Scotland to bring coat. Wallace is finally betrayed by the Scottish nobles and is sentenced to death by King Edward. Be Body is divided into pieces and hung in strategic places to study English as a warning to would-be dissidents.

The story has all the hallmarks of the great Hollywood historical epic. It is an epic love story that turns to a story of tragedy and revenge against the backdrop of the Scottish rebellion against the English in 12th Century. Cast as a piece of fiction (with some facts), it works extremely well, and Gibson directs with confidence, drawing you into the drama and misery of the character Wallace, as each corner has escalated its involvement in a larger mosaic of freedom for his country. The film is about a handful of scenes, which helped the "Legend" by William Wallace, with several Scottish Civic in a montage sequence, exaggerated claims about the people, which in turn feeds the notion that this story is more mythical than factual. As a result, when you come to in a film like this expecting historical accuracy, you will be disappointed (and you are missing the point) had.

The fight sequences are bloody and cruel. The limbs are hacked, decapitated heads, chests and arms are chopped off punctured, all in a bloody haze as a provisional Wallace takes on the British Army cavalry. The horses we are not out as they run upside down at the wooden spears. Although true to the period I am sure Mel Gibson, known to have especially with his next two films to an unusually strong preoccupation with violence. At the time, "Braveheart" was published it was considered more on the extreme side, but it is quite tame compared to later films, Gibson. Nevertheless, Gibson is also capable of some great visuals Orchestrate moments, especially with the lake swarms extras on each other during the fighting.

The characters are all engaging, especially Patrick McGoohan's uncanny performance as King Edward and Sophie Marceau Longshanks gentle but strong representation of the Princess Isabel, who married Edward's gay son, but ultimately helps Wallace at a crucial moment in his campaign against Edward. The superior performance of this film is, if Mel Gibson, his larger than life presentation by William Wallace commands the screen from beginning to end, the character of infusion with a sense of uncompromising passion that both the noble savage and at the same time.

"Braveheart" is a traditional Hollywood epic, filled with drama, intrigue, romance and great visuals. It is a wonderful, emotional journey, if also not entirely accurate historically.

Time Tunnel: Review Rewind New York Times – 19 November 1999 "The World Is Not Enough" was produced by Michael Apted, whose insightful glimpses into the maturation can be addressed in his latest documentary to see, "42 Up." Doggone if Mr. Apted is not in a position to make James Bond grow up a little.
