Inside Monument Valley $9.20 The sublimity of Inside Monument Valley isn’t in the lovely flute music created by jazz musician Paul Horn and Native American flutist R. Carlos Nakai, or in the informative, clear liner notes and crisp photos, but rather in the exquisite interplay between Arizona’s Monument Valley (the birds, insects, rain, thunder, and echoing canyon walls) and the highly inspired, all-improv music created by tw… |

Malaysia’s Eternal Tribute to its Heroes: The National Monument
Located on Jalan Parlimen in close proximity to the Parliament House, National Monument known as Tugu Negara in Malay is a tribute to the selfless Malaysian heroes who laid down their lives to ensure the peace and liberty of the nation.
The bronze sculpture was constructed in 2966 by the renowned American craftsman Felix de Weldon. Comprising 7 figures of military men, the 15.54m tall statue is one of the largest self-supporting bronze sculptures in the world making it one of Kuala Lumpur’s magnetic tourist attractions. The seven images represent seven essential characteristics of true heroes; unity, leadership, vigilance, strength, courage, suffering and sacrifice. The central figure holding a national flag is set between two armed militants. Towards the right of the flag bearer a kneeling soldier attending a wounded colleague manifesting the humanity that necessarily accompanies the strength of a champion. Two figures of fallen combatants compose the remainder of the monument.
The memorial site is composed of a semicircular pavilion and beautiful surrounding gardens as well as the National monument which stands in the middle of an extensive rectangular pool. The sparkling fountain and the reflecting waters make the edifice a captivating sight. Its central location in the heart of the metropolis makes a visit to the National Monument a convenient outing for guests of Citrus Hotel Kuala Lumpur. The trendy, contemporary hotel with its famed international cuisine and hospitable staff make it a great discount hotel in Kuala Lumpur, well suited to the needs of discerning travelers.

Monuments and Masterpieces $5.48 With an extraordinary collection of works by great sculptors and architects reflecting America’s history and aspirations, New York City itself is a magnificent museum of sculpture. The public parks and plazas of the city display statues of our heroes in war and peace; fabulous faades and fierce gargoyles decorate its great institutional and religious buildings; and commemorative monuments, bronze animals, and terra-cotta ornaments punctuate its boulevards and avenues. In Monuments and Masterpieces, art historian Donald Reynolds has created an authoritative guide to this unique collection. He surveys eighty examples of sculpture and architecture across the five boroughs, from Grant’s Tomb and the U.S. Customs House in Manhattan to the fanciful gates of the Bronx Zoo, Brooklyn’s Cadman Plaza war memorial, Staten Island’s "Hiker" monument, and the American Architectural Terra-Cotta Company in Queens. Reynolds charts the rise and fall of styles, symbols, and techniques of public art, telling the fascinating stories that lie behind every work. In doing so, he deftly chronicles the fascinating and sometimes surprising social history of America, recorded in granite, bronze, and terra cotta. |

The Monuments Men $12.99 At the same time Adolf Hitler was attempting to take over the western world, his armies were methodically seeking and hoarding the finest art treasures in Europe. The Fuehrer had begun cataloguing the art he planned to collect as well as the art he would destroy: “degenerate” works he despised. In a race against time, behind enemy lines, often unarmed, a special force of American and British museum directors, curators, art historians, and others, called the Momuments Men, risked their lives scouring Europe to prevent the destruction of thousands of years of culture. Focusing on the eleven-month period between D-Day and V-E Day, this fascinating account follows six Monuments Men and their impossible mission to save the world’s great art from the Nazis. |

Reversible Monuments $5.98 Not since 1959 when Octavio Paz and Samuel Beckett published An Anthology of Mexican Poetry, has there been a collection which so thoroughly examines the poetry of the country known for being "too far from God and too close to the United States." Yet, as Elliott Weinberger writes in his introduction,"Americans know everything about God, but next to nothing about Mexico-few know that Mexico-particularly when compared to the United States-is a kind of paradise for poets."Reversible Monuments introduces this "paradise" to American readers. It includes major international writers like Alberto Blanco, Pura Lopez Colome, and David Huerta, as well as exciting younger poets, and poets whose work, while well-known in the Spanish-speaking world has not yet seen publication in English. The twenty-five poets represented are as diverse as their American counterparts: They are urban, educated, younger, well travelled, aware of their literary heritage, and include Buddhists, feminists, Jewish poets, experimental poets, darkly brooding poets, and playfully entertaining poets. Until the Poem Remainsby Francisco HernandezStrip away all the flesh until the poem remainswith the sonorous darkness of bone. And smooth the bone, polish it, sharpen ituntil it becomes such a fine needle, that it pierces the tongue without painthough blood chokes the throat. Reversible Monuments includes a healthy bilingual selection by each poet, features an introduction by Elliott Weinberger, and gathers the work of esteemed translators alongside that of younger translators. It also includes biographies of the poets, notes on the poetry, and an extensive bibliography of contemporary Mexican poetry. |
